Champagnolle Guards

Champagnolle Guards

We’re the Champagnolle Guards from lower Rankansack.

We’re a part of the Texas Brigade and always on the attack.

We fought at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg and Chickamauga.

The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Petersburg are also witness to our saga.

We’ve marched oer mountains, hills and dales

On dusty Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania trails.

We fought the Yanks during all four years of war.

We kept faith with future generations and those that went before.

To enjoy freedom is our God given right

And that was the goal we held in our sight.

We are gone now but you have kept our memory

From being lost in the vast time of History.

To pass on the love of freedom and country was our intent.

We are proud you understand the message we sent.

We reach our hands across the great divide

To touch our ancestors for whom we feel such pride.

So continue to portray us with such love

As we view your thankfulness from above.

We feel humble for the veneration you show

For the service we bestowed so long ago.

About Civil War Reflections

Vernon has been a Civil War buff since childhood, but had been inactive in Civil War history for over two decades. However, in the early 1990s his interest was rekindled after watching Ken Burns’ “Civil War Documentary” on PBS. He particularly became interested in the Battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg) and decided to learn more about this epic struggle.
