Major General Fredrick Steele’s force completes crossing the Saline River.

The Confederate Army of the Trans-Mississippi, commanded by General Edmund Kirby Smith, has moved south to counter Union troops advancing up the Red River.   This leaves Major General Sterling Price (C.S.A) with five cavalry brigades to protect Arkansas against the belated foray of Steele.

Vernon has been a Civil War buff since childhood, but had been inactive in Civil War history for over two decades. However, in the early 1990s his interest was rekindled after watching Ken Burns’ “Civil War Documentary” on PBS. He particularly became interested in the Battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg) and decided to learn more about this epic struggle.
